The beautifully simple theme for Eurovision 2023 is “United by Music”
Last year’s Eurovision winner, Ukraine, handed over hosting rights to this year’s festival to 2nd place winners, United Kingdom.
UK Agency Super-union collaborated with Ukrainian agency Starlight Creative to create the 2023 slogan and brand. It reflects the collaboration between Ukraine and the UK during times of crisis and also showcases the intent of the contest: To bring Europe together, celebrating music and creativity.
The colours of this year are inspired by the UK and Ukranian flags, diversity and of the feelings of joy.
In the spirit of creating joy today, here are my top 5 favourite Eurovision facts
1. Australia debuted in the Eurovision song contest in 2015 as part of the 60 year anniversary, and as a friend of Europe, has been invited back every year since.
2. The United Kingdom gave zero points to ABBA in 1974. Outrageous!
3. The most covered Eurovision song is Domenico Mudugno’s “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu”– also known commonly as Volare. Aired in 1958, the song has been covered by David Bowie, Dean Martin, Cliff Richards and more…
4. Contestants from past Eurovision contests who have gone on to have successful careers include ABBA, Celine Dion, Cliff Richard, Julio Iglesias
5. In 1981, UK Act Bucks Fizz delighted the audience with their Velcro rip away skirts, leading to Velcro selling out in all stores across the nation within 48 hours.
From Eurovision, I take away the following lessons:
1. A common purpose and vision creates the foundation to successful collaboration
2. Creativity which embodies diversity and inclusion is key to international success
3. Failure is a stepping stone to success (ABBA!!)
Whatever your take aways are for Eurovision, enjoy the 2023 viewing fabulousness and as said in Volare Go “sing in the glow of a star that I know of”
Enjoy
